While the Florida state constitution provides counties with the power to govern themselves, counties can enhance their authority by adopting a charter. Pinellas County's Charter is reviewed every eight years by a Charter Review Commission (CRC) which can then place amendments to the Charter on the ballot to be considered by the voters.

The CRC is comprised of 13 members to include: one member from the Pinellas County Legislative Delegation, one constitutional officer, one member from the elected city officials, one member from the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners, and nine members from the public at large. The CRC gives the citizens of Pinellas County a direct influence on the structure of their local government by providing venues for public input.

The CRC shall review, on behalf of the citizens of Pinellas County, the operation of county government in order to recommend amendments to the Charter, if any. Although the members of the CRC are selected from a pool of applicants and appointed by the Board of County Commissioners (BCC), the CRC functions as an independent commission, separate from the BCC.

Sheriff's Office warns of phone scam

Pinellas County Sheriff’s detectives assigned to the Economic Crimes Unit are warning residents of a telephone scam that informs seniors a loved one is in trouble and asks them to wire money to different locations to help the loved one. During the phone scam, the caller identifies themselves as a relative or someone trying to help a relative. At times the callers will describe the relative as being in an accident, getting arrested, needing to pay fines or a lawyer or having some sort of gambling debt which needs to be paid immediately. The caller will ask for the money to be sent to distant locations, sometimes out of the county. The suspects will then send a running with fake identification to pick up the funds, work with a collusive merchant or use other methods to avoid being caught.

Important Notice:

THE NEW PINELLAS COUNTY CASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED IN ALL COURT AREAS

Odyssey, the new computer system that tracks civil, criminal, traffic and other court records is now online. The new system can be used by the public as well as police, prosecutors, public defenders and others. For the public, it can be used for many tasks, including finding the date of an upcoming court hearing or learning whether a job applicant has an arrest record in Pinellas County. The new system was praised at a recent news conference attended by Pinellas-Pasco Chief Judge Thomas McGrady, Pinellas Clerk Ken Burke, Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, State Attorney Bernie McCabe, and Tom Bartel, a vice president of Texas-based Tyler Technologies, which developed the system. Odyssey gives the public limited access to court records, much like the older system did, but with less confusion and clutter.

Beware of Lieutenant Scam

Several reports have been made about citizens getting calls from a subject posing as a Lieutenant. The caller informs the victim that a warrant has been issued for their arrest as a result of failing to appear for jury duty. The caller then demands the victim to purchase a debit card or green dot card to pay for the fines or face being arrested.

Detectives warn residents to beware of this phone scam and remind residents that the Sheriff's Office would not call persons with outstanding warrants and would not require a fine payment from persons with outstanding warrants via a prepaid or green dot card, or any other third party vendor.

Please be sure to read and share the article from Tampa Bay Newspapers.
